An Original Photo Of Something Beautiful

I don't really enjoy taking pictures of landscape as much as I do enjoy taking photos of people or of beautiful "moments" so to speak, so aesthetically speaking, I can't guarantee that it'll fit everyone's idea of beauty, but it does of mine.

This photo was taken at from an apartment in Broadbeach in the Gold Coast, when I and my friends went on schoolies. We were on the 23rd floor, right up against the beach so we had a magnificent view from the balcony. The person in the photo is my best friend, and we were sitting around drinking coffee. When I took this photo, it was at that unusual time of day when night begins to spill across onto day. The sea and sky seemed to glow, and the lights on the buildings just began to flicker on, so I figured it would be a beautiful moment to capture. I really love it because it's a very tranquil and peaceful image, and it's very reflective of that time of day: filled with silence and contemplation.

A Beautiful Piece of Architecture

I'm not really sure what qualifies as a truly beautiful piece of architecture, but in my opinion, my favourite would have to be...

The American Radiator Building, or as it's known now, The Bryant Park Hotel.

Built in 1924, the building was a grand departure from the pre-existing architecture of New York City in the Roaring Twenty's. The architect, Raymond Hood, broke away from the traditional Beaux-Arts architectural style and instead created a truly innovative building. The design of the building infuses both Art Deco and Gothic art styles. The deep black of the building represents coal, and the gold is symbolic of fire. I find this a truly beautiful piece of architecture because of two points. Firstly, it attains a truly timeless manner through it's appearance - the unconventional use of bold hues and infusion of modern and gothic art styles makes it a truly unique and striking building. Secondly, it holds historic importance to me because the building is a shining testament to the grandeur, prosperity and power of New York in the Prohibition, before the fall of Wall Street on Black Tuesday.

Best Creative Piece

So here goes. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to go about this.

I'd have to say my best creative work would be my HSC Major Work for Visual Arts last year. Here's a photo of it on the night of my school's Year 12 Art Exhibition.

Rhapsody In Colour
Acrylic on canvas, 4 panels, spanning roughly 6^2 metres in total

I've been told to provide a paragraph on how it's interesting.

This artwork was inspired by the literary works of Arthur O'Shaughnessy, primarily the opening lines of his poem Ode from the collection Moonlight and Music.

We are the music-makers
and we are the dreamers of dreams

Taking this, I sought to create an artwork that was an infusion of the two most influential factors in my life: music, and my friends. For this artwork, I went to go see my friends perform at live performances - at a dinner party, an underground club, or performing at the local bar, and even busking in Central Station. Each panel showcases a particular art style which is supposed to encapsulate a musical personality [the scholar, the entertainer, the prima donna and the vagabond] and a musical genre [classical, electronic dance, soul, and folk/indie]. Each art piece similarly corresponds with a piece of music that is extremely important/powerful to me.

If you're interested, the song list is here:

Panel 1 - Raindrop Prelude by Frederic Chopin
Panel 2 - City Of Dreams by Alesso & Dirty South

Panel 3 - Shake It Out by Florence + The Machine
Panel 4 - I Will Wait by Mumford & Sons
